Posting on EGN: An Overview
Written & Edited by Slein Jinn Foreword by Keevel MacKror Second Edition ©EvilGamer.net, 2006 Foreword
I'm an asshole and an asshat, but I'm not a dumbass or a fucktard. I used to be, but posting amongst this crowd will wean you off that habit quickly. Why would any community, especially one that strives for growth and continual improvement in its member base, tolerate an asshole or an asshat? As an asshole or an asshat you have a chance to brighten someone’s day or set someone straight. Why, then, are dumbasses and fucktards not tolerated? They are not tolerated because they contribute no smiles, spread misinformation and generally weaken the integrity of the site in a way that 1000 assholes could never do. You may never smile at an asshole's post or ever have to be set straight by an asshat, but their very existence makes this site better. You may like a poster who's a dumbass, but they still need to be set straight or the whole site suffers. So, please, don't be a Bick. Instead, please join me as a reformed dumbassed fucktard. - Keevel MacKror
Since we've got an influx of fucktards on these boards of late, the powers that be (well, I) have decided that it's time to put forth a guide on how to minimize the negative effects of your collective lack of mental fortitude on your posting experience. It's not really that difficult to fit in at EGN, but remember, you're the one who needs to adapt to the existing community, not the other way around. If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning. - Catherine the Great Ok, enough with the cheesy bullshit, let’s cut to the point.
Chapter 1
Don't be a pussy. Chances are, at some point in your EGN posting career, you're going to do something to elicit the wrath of the established members of the community. OK, it happens, deal with it and move on. Getting your panties in a wad and throwing a tantrum is only going to make what could have been a relatively brief and painless incident into something considerably less pleasant. Nobody here gives a damn about your feelings, so don't bother complaining about how they've been damaged. Just accept that you probably deserved to get bitched at and it'll end there. Morons’ getting yelled at when they fuck up is a big part of the reason the SK community is the most informative of any class board; it's our form of natural selection.
Chapter 2
Learn proper English. Paragraphs, appropriate terminal punctuation, reasonably limited errors in spelling, proper capitalization, etc. - we expect to see them all. We've got a fair few non-native English speakers on these boards, most of whom do a damned good job with the language; I'm sure you can overcome whatever language deficiency, indolence included, that may be affecting you and form an easily read post. It is neither our responsibility nor our obligation to help you, so the easier you make it for us to do so, the more assistance you're likely to receive. We're not going to wade through a bunch of incoherent bullshit to try and figure out what you need.
Chapter 3
If you have a question, try search first. If there's one thing SK's hate, it's answering the same question we've already answered three times in the last week. The longer this board is up, the more expansive its resources will be. A message board isn't just a forum in which you can ask your questions, it's also a vast archive of previous questions and answers on which you can draw. Many new posters seem to believe that it's not a big deal, but it is if for no other reason than principle: if you can't be bothered to use the resources already available, why should we be bothered to help you?
Chapter 4
Don’t fuck with existing threads. If your vigorous use of the search feature has left you empty-handed, then start a new thread. Don’t bump a dead thread; it’s dead for a reason and, if someone wants to read it, they’ll search for it. Equally importantly, don’t steal someone else’s thread. The fact that a gear check thread in The Armory features someone at a similar level of play to you, for example, doesn’t entitle you to de-rail that thread with your own gear check. Sure, discuss topics within their respective threads, but do start new a new thread when you feel inclined to ask an autonomous question.
Chapter 5
Learn what goes in which forum. We have separate forums for a reason. The fact that you think your question is super important and that you want to make sure everyone sees it doesn’t entitle you to stick it in The Arena regardless of its subject matter. If you have a question about AA’s, put it in Abilities and Tactics where it belongs. If you want help with your gear, head to The Armory. If this is somehow difficult for you, and you are unsure as to what the nature of the intended content of a certain sub-forum, then look at some of the threads within and figure it out; don’t simply take a stab in the dark and end up putting a rant about how you want the United States to pull out of Iraq in the Suggestions forum. Keeping threads sorted into the various forum divisions makes it easier to reference them later and helps to keep the boards organized in general.
Chapter 6
Don't expect us to do your work for you. Don't ask us to do what you could do for yourself. Believe it or not, we have things to do too, and because I am included in "us," our time is probably more valuable than yours is anyway. If you want parse data for something simple, conduct a bloody parse; don't post a request for someone to do your work for you. That said, if you're trying to form a comparative parse and need help with the half you'll be comparing to yourself, for instance, someone here will likely be willing to help (provided, of course, that there's a good reason for it).
Chapter 7
Lucy is your friend. There's this amazing website named Lucy. She is your best friend. Lucy knows nearly everything about nearly every spell in the game, and is a valuable resource for item information as well. Don't ask us if Spell-X stacks with Spell-Y, check the "Stacking" section on Lucy and find out for yourself. Only ask us for spell help if Lucy is unable to help you first.
This is the most knowledgeable and informative EverQuest community anywhere, and anyone can hold the key to unlock this treasure-trove of insight. It is not hard to fit in here at EvilGamer.net; one need only be mindful of the local establishment and traditions and respectful of those from whom you solicit aid. It is not our job to serve you, so the easier you make it for us to help, the more likely you are to find the answers you seek. - Slein Jinn

A very formal introduction for any new posters. I like it.

Can't we just tell them....
don't be a douche?

Slein Jinn 02-02-2006 02:29 AM

You have to spell it out for them... they're fucktards, remember?

Keevel 02-02-2006 02:31 AM

Where's the lost chapter on how to properly maintain fuckness?

That's more of an art that must be learned through experience than it is something able to be taught in a generalized outline on how not to behave like a damned fool.

Couldn't we just add a link to some of Newtank's or Tinydemons post? That pretty much outlines what you don't want to do
